Alec Baldwin plans book on alienation following flap with daughter
Southern Review of Books says angry star hopes book about his flap with daughter Ireland by screen actress Kim Basinger will help more people understand the incredible strains created by parental alienation
/Movies and Video PR News/ - ATLANTA, GA, June 14, 2007 - In the process of apologizing for boorish remarks to his estranged 11-year-old daughter Ireland, according to the Atlanta-based Southern Review of Books online newsletter, actor Alec Baldwin said that he is in the process of preparing a book that will help people "understand the incredible strains created by parental alienation."
The actor took to his Web site in late April to apologize for an angry voicemail message he left for Ireland which made its way onto the Internet.
In the recording, Baldwin called his daughter a "rude, thoughtless pig," and accused her of deliberately missing a scheduled phone call. The call was one of the subjects of discussion at a closed-door hearing regarding the actor's visitation rights with his daughter. Upon hearing the message, a family court judge ordered Baldwin to temporarily cease all contact with the child pending a May hearing.
Though it was meant to remain confidential, the recording fell into the hands of TMZ editor Harvey Levin, who published it on his Web site, while refusing to reveal how he obtained it. Baldwin immediately issued a statement accusing Basinger and her attorneys of leaking the recording in violation of a court order meant to keep the details of the warring duo's custody dispute under wraps.
Baldwin apologized in an April 20 statement on his Web site for losing his cool and berating Ireland.
Baldwin's attorney, Vicki Greene, filed court documents the same day seeking to determine whether Basinger and her legal team were indeed behind leaking the recording, and if so, what legal action could be taken against them, as well as against TMZ for posting the material. Greene's contempt-of-court filing included a letter she sent Levin on April 19, cautioning him against publishing the material and vowing to take legal action if he did so. "If Mr. Levin had a tape-recorded message between (Baldwin) and the minor child, it had to have originated from (Basinger) or her employees, agents or attorneys," Greene wrote in her court documents.
The custody battle between Baldwin and ex-wife Basinger began several years ago. Basinger initially refused to let Ireland even speak with her father on the phone. The courts stepped in and Basinger agreed that Baldwin could speak to Ireland, now 11, but only on certain days and times.
Basinger is facing possible jail time for contempt of court stemming from an unspecified violation of the custody order last year. A hearing on the matter was set for June.
Recent statements aside, Baldwin's theories on why his ex-wife is at fault in the situation could fill a book - and apparently, they're going to.
"... I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child," Baldwin wrote in his "Webaculpa." "I'm sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child. I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now. You have to go through this to understand. (Although I hope you never do.) I am sorry for what happened. But I am equally sorry that a court order was violated, which had deliberately been put under seal in this case."
"Once my book is published, I'm sure more people will understand the incredible strains created by parental alienation," he wrote on his Web site.
