Steven Fischer's New Documentaries are High Def

Emmy-nominated film producer Steven Fischer, known for his Steve & Bluey cartoons and expressive documentaries like Carl Clark: Life at 1/125 of a Second, recently completed two short documentaries shot in high definition.

/Movies and Video PR News/ - September 27, 2007 - Now & Forever Yours: Letters to an Old Soldier was made for NVCC-TV in Northern Virginia, and debuted through Comcast Cable on August 10th. The docu-drama stars Virginia-based actors Katie Tschida and Winston Shearin as Antonia Ford and Major Joseph Willard, a southern belle and union staff officer who engaged in a secret romance during the American Civil War. Actor Clay Steward's standout southern drawl added a memorable touch as the movie's narration.

Subsidized by Northern Virginia Community College with additional supported coming from Historic Fairfax City, Inc., The Fairfax Museum, and historic Welbourne Manor, Now & Forever Yours was shot by Fischer and D.P. Richard Attix using the Panasonic P2 HVX 200. The documentary was co-produced by Susie McCauley and Charles Siegel.

"I first shot with the P2 on a documentary in Los Angeles earlier this year," Fischer said enthusiastically. "The weight, size, and handling of the camera is so incredibly perfect for me. I'd never before taken to a camera so instantly and so comfortably. For me, the balance this camera has makes it more than ideal for handheld shots."

"Strange as it may sound," Fischer adds, "I like that the card limits you to 16 minutes of footage. It takes me back to the days of shooting 100-foot daylight spools on a Bolex. You know? You had about 3-minutes of footage you could get before you had to change spools. That limitation forces me to know photography better, and it forces me to be more in tune with my vision for the shoot."

The P2 memory card, short for "Professional Plug-In", is a tape-less recording media. The memory capacity of the P2 card is relatively low, holding between two and eight gigabytes of information or between 2 and 32 minutes of screen time depending on the shooting format (DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, or DVCPRO HD).

In October, Fischer will complete Francis Scott Key: A Life for Rockbridge Academy, a classical education and Christian school that is moving its location from Millersville, Maryland to historic Belvoir in Crownsville, Maryland. Belvoir (Scott's Plantation), first surveyed in 1662, was the country estate of Key's wealthy uncle, Dr. Upton Scott. Key spent childhood summers at the estate.

The made-for-web short doc, about 7-minutes, was produced at ADG Creative in Columbia, Maryland where Fischer has just signed on as the company's Senior Creative. Roanoke-based narrator Bruce Jacobson lent his smoky Sam Elliott voice to the film's soundtrack. And Alan Gephardt, who portrays Francis Scott Key for the National Park Service, voiced the poet-lawyer.

Produced in the Ken Burns' style, Fischer's live action footage of St. John's College, the lush grounds at Belvoir, family gravesites, and various atmospheric shots including sunsets and sunrises were shot with Sony's HDR-FX1 camera in the 1080i format which offers a frame resolution of 1920 × 1080, about 2.07 million pixels. The HDR-FX1 was the first HDV 3CCD camcorder to support the 1080i format.

Fischer's other recent documentaries include behind-the-scenes and interviews with legendary animator Bill Melendez, famed for directing the Peanuts animated specials and features, and Freedom Dance, which he made with animator Craig Herron. Freedom Dance premiered in May at the Maryland Film Festival and was narrated by Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay. Fischer produced his first documentary in 1996. Since then he has earned numerous accolades and honors from the Emmy Awards, Telly Awards, Cine Golden Eagle Awards, WorldFest International Film Festival, the Directors Guild of America, and the New York Festivals.
