LA Shorts Fest 09 Introduces Work From Numerous Emerging Filmmakers

The 13th Annual LA Shorts Fest will kick off July 23 with a diverse mix of short films, documentaries and music videos from around the world.

    HOLLYWOOD, CA, July 19, 2009 /Movies and Video PR News/ -- The 13th Annual LA Shorts Fest will kick off July 23 with a diverse mix of short films, documentaries and music videos from around the world. Billed as one of the world's largest short film festivals, LA Shorts Fest endeavors to highlight the work of filmmakers who have not yet made it onto the world stage, but whose work is destined to be discovered. Below, you will find highlights of a few of the films showcased in this year's event. The LA Shorts Fest runs July 23-31 at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Cinemas in Hollywood.

PERIOD PORTRAIT- Directed by Nitzan Mager. Scarlet just got her period today. Vera just realized she is pregnant. Jane is entering menopause. And Nate is... confused. We follow their stories until their paths converge... in the feminine hygiene aisle of the supermarket. Humorous and sharp, the film provides a much needed look into a part of life normally kept under wraps. Starring Trieste Kelly Dunn, Jerry Goralnick, Brittany Guben, Nadja Hoyer-Booth. Screening in program 31 July 29 at 3:15pm.

THE NICE GIRL- Directed by V.K. Shah. What are the chances that you would meet a stranger one day that could kill, kidnap, test, hurt, or hug you? That's what happened to Kate. After a terrible day at work, Kate is accosted by Jack, a stranger, who leads her on a quick journey, one that can change her, if she plays her cards right. Starring April Wade and Sigmund Watkins. Screening in program 33 July 29 at 7:45pm.

THIS MONDAY-Directed by Tim DeKay.This Monday Jack Sorenson starts a new job. The new work place is filled with extraordinary co-workers whose funny, dark and twisted stories are as questionable as the job itself. This Monday Jack enters this new world head on and discovers that he too is extraordinary. Screening in program 23 July 27 at 7:45pm.

HALF KENNETH-Directed by Ken Ochiai. 1945: after the death of their father, Ken and Jo escape a Japanese American internment camp to find their Caucasian mother, but discover something neither of them could have anticipated. Starring Avery Dennis, Hunter Dennis, and Ikuma Ando. Screening in program 11 July 25 at 3:15pm.

MIKE, INC.-Directed by Paal Wilhelm Nesset and Jose Pablo Gonzalez. Set in a dystopian future, Mike Inc. reveals one worker's attempt to retain his identity amid extreme corporate restraints. You thought you had a rough day at work. Screening in program 38 July 30 at 7:45pm.

HUNGRY FOR LOVE-Directed by Ruckus Skye. Unable to curb her late night cravings Rhoda, a 72-year-old widow, seeks the help of a quack hypnotherapist and accidentally unearths a startling secret from her past that might change more than just her snacking habits. Starring Patricia Place, Sam Brittan and Cheri Christian. Screening in program 31 July 29 at 3:15pm.

LOGUE-Directed by Hiroshi Kumatani. Aica, a young New York artist, finds that her husband, K, is suffering from a form of dementia. Soon after its finding, K takes his own life out of fear of losing his reasoning and memories of Aica. In a grief period, Aica seeks the way to communicate with K, even though he no longer exists in physical sense. Screening in program 25 at 1:00pm.

THE TRANSMOGRIFICATION OF ALEX JURGENSEN-Directed by Jason Baldari. Alex Jurgensen does what any normal person does. He wakes up, he eats a meal, and he goes to work. His life is normal. Too normal. One morning Alex comes face to face with a mirror and encounters not his reflection, but his alter, who intends to drive him all the way through the looking glass. Starring Ian Roberts, Cayman Grant and Terry City. Screening in program 38 July 30 at 7:45pm.

PSYCHE ON MELROSE-Directed by Douglas Van Bebber. A family of three gets in over their heads when they hit the latest trendy restaurant in Hollywood, Psyche On Melrose. Where you are served a healthy dose of therapy with a great meal. Starring Sean Whalen, Molly O'Leary and Troy Blendell.
Screening in program 38 July 30 at 7:45pm.

THE COMPUTER: WONDER OF THE FUTURE- Directed by Michael Kenneth Jackson. Science-Tone Films, maker of children's educational movies in the 1950s, presents a fantastical look at how computers will one day simplify the lives of all who use them. Screening in program 18 July 26 at 7:45pm.

CLONES GONE WILD-Directed by Harry Frishberg. When Ben Hocker discovers, to his horror, that he has a clone, his button-down world comes crashing down. Ben's alter-ego, the enigmatic 'Dolce', is everything Ben wishes he could be: wealthy, witty and irresistible to the ladies. The only question in Ben's mind is whether to make peace with the clone or make him rest in peace. Starring Chad Mathews, Philip Boyd and Gary Weeks. Screening in program 16 July 26 at 3:15pm.

WE LOVE YOU-Directed by Jonathan Kalafer. A short documentary chronicling the Rainbow Gatherings that have attracted tens of thousands of people at a time to a different U.S. National Forest. They create a temporary city in the wilderness, complete with kitchens, plumbing, medical care, sanitation, and childcare. The gathering culminates with an elaborate and graceful prayer for Peace on the Fourth of July. All of this happens through the efforts of individuals without any formal organization or leaders and without anyone buying a ticket or being paid for their labor. After the Gathering, Rainbows take great efforts to re-naturalize the area, leaving virtually no trace of what is often the largest city in the area ever existed. Screening in program 20 July 27 at 1 pm.
