Aquila Polonica's New DVD 'Siege' Featured on Leonard Lopate Show

Teacher and historian Sam Bryan talks about the making of 'Siege,' the Oscar-nominated WWII documentary of the Siege of Warsaw, made by his father, renown photojournalist Julien Bryan on WNYC 93.9 FM. 'Siege' is now on DVD for the first time ever.

NEW YORK, NY, August 04, 2010 /Movies and Video PR News/ -- Marking the release this month of the historic documentary 'Siege' for the first time on DVD, renown filmmaker Julien Bryan's son - teacher and historian Sam Bryan - will discuss the making of the rarely seen documentary on the Leonard Lopate Show (WNYC 93.9 FM) at noon EDT, Tue. Aug. 3. The interview can also be listened to live, then in an archived version on the NPR-affiliate's web site, www.wnyc.org.

Julien Bryan shot the gut-wrenching 'Siege' amidst the bombardment of Poland's capital in the opening days of World War II. Bryan was a skilled American photojournalist when he arrived in Warsaw with 6,000 feet of raw film just a week after the Nazi invasion of the country. He risked his life to record the massive destruction of Warsaw and its people during two weeks of Hitler's merciless attacks.

Bryan smuggled his precious footage out of Europe in the chemical container of a gas mask. It was worth the risk. His images of destruction, which have been newly restored for this DVD release, shocked the American public into awareness of the looming danger posed by the Nazis.

'Siege' was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Short, one-reel) in 1940, and in 2006 was inducted into the U.S. National Film Registry for preservation as one of the nation's most "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films."

Publisher Aquila Polonica has added several new special features to the newsreel, including an audio clip of Bryan on Edward R. Murrow's radio show "This I Believe" and original music by L.A. composer and David Lynch collaborator Marek Zebrowski.

'Siege' ($14.95) is produced by Aquila Polonica in cooperation with the International Film Foundation.
